Do I need to seal my countertops & how often?

We recommend sealing natural stone annually for optimal maintenance.

  • Start with clean countertops
  • Apply a small amount of sealer directly onto the stone surface.
    • Work on approximately a 4-foot section at a time to avoid overwhelming the process.
  • While wearing rubber cleaning gloves, disperse the sealer evenly on the tops, edges, and backsplash if applicable
  • Allow sealer to absorb into the stone for a about 2 minutes
  • Use a rag, such as an old T-shirt to prevent lint from being left behind in the sealant, to wipe up excess sealer
  • Repeat this process until all areas of the stone are adequately sealed

What is the difference between granite and quartz?

Granite is natural stone mined from quarries. Each slab of granite is unique with variation in color, pattern & veining. Granite is a durable stone that is heat-resistant and scratch-resistant. Because it is a porous stone it will need to be sealed annually to protect it from absorbing liquids, oils and bacteria.

Quartz is a non-porous, engineered stone made from a combination of the most durable mineral in granite, which is crushed quartz crystals & resin. The quartz content typically ranges from 90%-95% with the remaining percentage consisting of resin and pigments. Quartz countertops are low-maintenance and easy to clean as they do not require sealing. We recommend using a trivet or hot pad when placing pans or crockpots on a quartz countertop to prevent cracking.

What cleaning products should I avoid on granite countertops?

Granite is durable however some cleaning products should be avoided. Avoid using any cleaners that contain acids such as vinegar, lemon juice or ammonia as they can dull the shine of the stone over time. Do not use bleach or harsh chemical cleaners.

Stay away from all abrasive cleaners, scouring pads and any other material that can scratch the surface.  Stick to mild dish soap and water for every day cleaning.

What cleaning products should I avoid on quartz countertops?

Quartz is durable however some cleaning products should be avoided such as any harsh chemicals, bleach, oven cleaner, soft scrub, comet or any other abrasive cleaners.  These can damage the resin in the quartz and dull its shine. Other products to be avoided include but are not limited to magic erasers, S.O.S. pads, products with pumice, batteries, paint removers or furniture strippers. Quartz is prone to cracking from heat exposure. A trivet or cutting board should always be used between heat sources and a quartz countertop.
